Aljomar begins production of organic Iberian pigs

This year, the Aljomar Group is launching a new project, marking the beginning of its commitment to the production of organic Iberian pigs. The first steps have already been taken thanks to the positive results achieved with the controlled production cycle of Aljomar Hams , which guarantees the genetics, care, and high-quality feed of its acorn-fed Iberian pigs.

In fact, Aljomar's current Iberian pig production already meets some of the requirements for organic livestock farming , as outlined in Regulation 834/2007 of June 28, 2007, on organic production and labelling of organic products. These include, for example, the amount of land per animal and agricultural production based on the optimal use of local resources. Furthermore, Aljomar staff are expected to receive the necessary training and resources to successfully begin the pig breeding and selection process, in accordance with the regulations that certify the animals as organic.

The challenge is to achieve the production and marketing of the best organic pigs , all while ensuring sustainable, economically viable, and socially just agricultural development. The Aljomar Group is also committed to animal welfare, prioritizing preventative management and breeding practices to minimize problems associated with pests or diseases.

This organic production project is part of the development of Aljomar's first Sustainability Report , a detailed document outlining the company's economic, environmental, and social commitments. The document was made public in Toledo last Friday, September 21st, during the major event celebrating Aljomar's 25th Anniversary. The company is currently one One of the most important producers of Iberian hams, sausages and pork, with an annual turnover of 32 million, distribution in all Spanish autonomous communities and in 30 other countries.

The Aljomar Sustainability Report has been prepared using the procedures and essential standards of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and outlines the company's short- and medium-term sustainability objectives. The Aljomar Group thus reaffirms its commitment to improving the quality of life for consumers.

Aljomar Healthy Line

Organic production is combined with a commitment to producing healthy and safe products, adhering to the regulations and requirements of various certifying bodies, such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This year, the company achieved its goal of obtaining ISO 22000:2005 certification. Similarly, the brand complies with the Iberian Quality Standard (CALICER), the "Tierra de Sabor" Guarantee Mark , the Guijuelo Designation of Origin , the Spanish Lactose Intolerant Association, and the Spanish Federation of Celiac Associations, while also complying with the strict legislation applicable in the different countries to which its products are exported.

The report also highlights the importance Aljomar places on collaborating with the community, through Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives such as the creation of the "Solidarity Product" seal, which identifies certain products. Thanks to this initiative, in 2017 Aljomar donated more than €32,000 in cash and in-kind donations to various organizations, including Pyfano, the Spanish Association Against Cancer, Red Madre, and Cascajares-Fundación Aladina.

They are also aware of their environmental impact, so the ultimate goal of achieving sustainable operations is the cornerstone of their environmental management, which is geared towards understanding, controlling, and efficiently reducing these impacts. As a result of their deep respect for nature (the foundation of their products), Aljomar affirms that they take full responsibility for each and every action they take daily in relation to their environment.

Aljomar faces its future with optimism and firm commitments that define its sustainability project. They will implement well-planned actions, linked to the social and natural environment, with the aim of contributing to improving the quality of life for the population. And, as the founder, Don Alfonso Sánchez, affirms, “we are proud of our Sustainability Report, even more so as it coincides with the celebration of the Aljomar Group’s 25th Anniversary.”

Furthermore, the company gives a prominent role to its team of professionals, because at ALJOMAR FAMILY, each and every link in the chain is relevant to the expansion and consolidation of the project, with a strategy based on the coexistence and balance between traditional values and technology and innovation. Recognition and respect for the work performed by each team member, continuous training and development, and occupational health and safety are the strong pillars upon which the organization is built.
