Responding to the call for collaboration from the Association of Children with Cancer of Castile and León (PYFANO) , the Aljomar Family has taken up the challenge and will participate in the financing of the ambitious Humanization and Comfort Project for the Pediatric Oncology Ward of the new Salamanca Hospital. Specifically, Jamones Aljomar will cover the €3,145 needed to create an interactive area in the oncology and hematology ward corridor, called PLAY WITH YOUR SHADOW. In this space, hospitalized children will be able to dance and do shadow puppetry to entertain themselves and learn during their stay, as they are isolated and this will be a good excuse to at least leave their rooms and socialize with other children.
Pyfano expects the facilities to be available in spring 2021 and is currently undertaking an intensive fundraising effort to undertake this important project proposed by CAUSA (Salamanca Healthcare Complex). The initiative is designed to “create an atmosphere that helps children hospitalized with cancer and their families escape the hospital, making the space a source of positive emotions that will help the children cope with the illness in the new Salamanca hospital,” as the association explains.
This Pediatric Unit receives children not only from Salamanca but also from other parts of Castile and León, as the Salamanca Hospital is a referral center for bone marrow transplantation. In the region, around 50 children are diagnosed each year, according to the Castile and León population-based tumor registry. The treatments they receive can last between two and five years, and, without a doubt, "play, as a non-pharmacological pain reliever, is a great ally for these children," as demonstrated by various studies on the subject.
The actions of this project undertaken by Pyfano will be carried out in the pediatric day hospital, the pit area, the pediatric oncology hospitalization area, the medical and support offices and the respite room for parents and children with cancer.
