June 5th is World Environment Day ; it was the United Nations General Assembly that in 1972 agreed to establish this date on the calendar with the aim of promoting environmental awareness within society and mobilizing organizations and individuals to protect the planet and develop alternatives that do not harm the environment.
Each year more than 100 countries join the initiative under a commemorative slogan and a specific theme.
For 2019, the theme revolves around air pollution, a problem that, according to a UN Environment report, is the one that presents the greatest environmental risk to health today.
In fact, according to this organization, 7 million people die each year worldwide due to air pollution. And nearly 90% of the world's population does not breathe clean air.
What is a carbon footprint?
One of the environmental concepts that has gained the most strength in recent years has been that of "the carbon footprint".
"The carbon footprint refers to the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced by humans when manufacturing a product or carrying out their daily activities; it is the footprint left on the planet and is expressed in tons of CO2 emitted."
Each of us leaves a footprint on the planet according to our consumption and daily habits. As we have already seen, the figures and statistics related to climate change are chilling, and this fear is likely to increase considering that, according to a report by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), the probability that climate change is caused by humans has risen to 95%.
It's not all bad news, because, just as humans are the main cause of climate change, they also have the power to solve, reverse and change the current situation.
Why not start by finding out the environmental impact of your actions? Use the carbon footprint calculator.
At Aljomar, we are deeply committed to environmental responsibility and calculate our carbon footprint annually to help in the fight against climate change.
In addition, on June 21st, all company employees will participate in an environmental awareness workshop.
We are convinced that we can do something to change the situation, and you?
