The We Art Water Film Festival is organized by the We Are Water Foundation, supported by the United Nations through UNRIC (United Nations Regional Information Centre for Western Europe).
This is an international short film festival designed to "recognize and reward the talent of all those with a clear sensitivity to the world's water crisis and who, moreover, know how to express it in their productions." The competition seeks to raise awareness and generate global visibility through the creation of audiovisual works that address this theme. The entries, whether documentary, animation, or fiction, must be related to water and sanitation. They must also touch on hygiene, pollution, agriculture, disease, food, education, and other related topics.
The data is devastating and reflects global needs in this area:
* Regarding Sanitation:
• 2.4 billion people do not have access to basic sanitation.
• In the world there are almost as many people forced to practice open defecation (946 million) as there are inhabitants on the African continent (1.1 billion).
• There are more people in the world with a mobile phone than with a toilet.
• 842,000 deaths per year could be avoided with adequate sanitation and hygiene facilities.
• 1,000 children under the age of 5 die every day as a result of the lack of basic sanitation and drinking water.
• The lack of a toilet or latrine near their home is the reason why thousands of women suffer rape and sexual assault every year.
* About Water:
• 663 million people live without access to safe drinking water
• The influence of human beings is clear in the global warming of the planet:
• 80% of glaciers are retreating.
• Low-income countries suffer particularly from natural disasters (e.g., Vanuatu recently).
• The human body is composed of 60% water.
• Water covers almost 70% of the planet.
• 1.2 billion people have no access to clean water.
• 70% of available drinking water is used for agriculture.
