In its firm commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, Aljomar has launched a significant reforestation project on its Vera Vieja estate, where its acorn-fed Iberian pigs are raised. This initiative is part of the Guijuelo-based company's commitment to the conservation of the dehesa , an essential ecosystem for producing the highest quality acorn-fed Iberian ham.
The initiative involves planting 2,000 holm oaks and 2,000 cork oaks, a total of 4,000 trees selected from seeds of specimens in the Mediterranean dehesa (pastureland) with the best growth and fruiting characteristics. This process has been carried out with rigorous technical analysis to ensure that the new trees grow under optimal conditions and contribute to the ecological balance of the area.

Protection and care of seedlings
To guarantee the survival of these new trees against external factors such as wildlife and weather conditions, Aljomar has implemented a double protection system:
- 1. Individual protectors: They facilitate the adaptation of seedlings by protecting them from cold, hail and wind, as well as preventing access by livestock and preventing damage from trampling by animals, people or vehicles.
- 2. Galvanized cloth cages: Designed specifically for reforestation, with heights between 1.5 and 2 meters, they reinforce the protection of the trees when they begin to protrude from the individual protectors and until they acquire sufficient strength to develop autonomously.
In addition, a bamboo cane has been placed next to each seedling to guide its growth and ensure straight and stable development, guaranteeing good rooting in the soil.

A commitment to the future of the dehesa
Since its founding, Aljomar has worked to conserve and improve the dehesa, a vital ecosystem for raising free-range Iberian pigs and producing top-quality acorn-fed Iberian ham. The reforestation of Vera Vieja demonstrates the company's commitment to future generations and to preserving this unique environment.
"When we acquired this estate, my father said that we would take on the challenge of improving it with care, investment, and time. The pastureland is our greatest treasure, and its improvement is a responsibility we cannot shirk," says José Luis Sánchez, Deputy Director of Aljomar.
With this initiative, the company continues to bet on sustainability and the improvement of the ecosystem, ensuring that the holm oak and the cork oak, jewels of the dehesa, continue to provide the acorn that feeds the Iberian pigs and guarantees the excellence of Aljomar products, thus reinforcing its controlled production cycle.
